Shocker (character)
A self-taught engineer turned vibrational shock-wave mercenary.
The Shocker, whose real name is Herman Schultz, is a Marvel Comics supervillain who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #46 in March 1967, created by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr. He is primarily an enemy of Spider-Man and a regular member of the web-slinger's rogues gallery.
Schultz was a self-taught engineer and a highly skilled safe-cracker who built a pair of gauntlets that generate powerful vibrational shock waves. He added these gauntlets to a protective battlesuit and became a mercenary for hire. As the Shocker, he quickly climbed the ranks of New York City's criminal underworld, often working for various crime lords and clashing with Spider-Man. Unlike most of Spider-Man's foes, Shocker is driven by a desire for wealth and a comfortable life rather than revenge or chaos, which has occasionally led him to cooperate with Spider-Man or other heroes when it benefits him. The storyline Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral later revealed that he is related to Mary Jane Watson.
The character has appeared in various media, voiced by Jim Cummings in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Jeff Bennett in The Spectacular Spider-Man, and David B. Mitchell in the Spider-Man video game. In the 2017 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: Homecoming, two versions appeared: Herman Schultz played by Bokeem Woodbine and Jackson Brice played by Logan Marshall-Green.
Publication history
The Shocker debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #46 (March 1967), created by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr. Romita later explained that his design was inspired by thoughts of "cushion" and "quilt," imagining that a character with a shocking power who vibrates buildings apart would need some kind of cushioning effect. He was a regular in Thunderbolts from issue #157 to 162, before deserting the team, and was a main character in The Superior Foes of Spider-Man.
Fictional character biography
Born in New York City to Marianne Sinek and Henrik Schultz, Herman Schultz dropped out of high school despite his talents as an inventor and engineer. Instead of legitimate work, he became a successful burglar and, by his own claim, the world's best safe-cracker. After being caught and imprisoned, he built gauntlets that fire high-frequency air blasts, using them to escape and become the Shocker.

Lore & Background
Herman Schultz was born in New York City to Marianne Sinek and Henrik Schultz. A high school dropout with talents as an inventor and engineer, he became a successful burglar and safe-cracker. After being caught and incarcerated, he developed a pair of gauntlets capable of producing powerful vibrational shock waves, which he used to escape prison and become the Shocker. He defeated Spider-Man in their first confrontation but was later beaten and sent back to prison after Spider-Man pinned his thumbs away from the gauntlets' triggers.
Schultz joined Egghead's Masters of Evil and later worked with various teams including the Sinister Six, the Sinister Syndicate, and the Thunderbolts. He was hired by the Nazi war criminal Baron Von Lundt to kill Dominic Fortune. During the Origin of the Species storyline, he was invited by Doctor Octopus to rejoin the Sinister Six. In The Superior Foes of Spider-Man, Silvermane crowned him the new don of the New York underworld after he singlehandedly defeated the Punisher. During the 'Devil's Reign' storyline, he was a member of Mayor Wilson Fisk's Thunderbolts. The 'Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral' storyline revealed that he is related to Mary Jane Watson through his cousin's marriage.
Reader's Guide
The Shocker stands out among Spider-Man's rogues gallery for his rational, professional demeanor and focus on wealth and a comfortable life rather than revenge or chaos. He has sometimes put aside differences with Spider-Man and helped heroes when it was in his best interest. His costume, designed by John Romita Sr. with a 'cushion' and 'quilt' aesthetic, absorbs the force of his gauntlets and establishes a vibrational shield. The gauntlets, known as vibro-smashers, project concentrated blasts of compressed air vibrating at intense frequency, capable of crumbling concrete and damaging internal organs. Shocker's personality is notably rational; he recognizes his limitations and has engaged in psychotherapy. He has been adapted into various media, voiced by Jim Cummings, Jeff Bennett, and David B. Mitchell, and portrayed by Bokeem Woodbine and Logan Marshall-Green in the 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming. His legacy is that of a persistent, calculating villain who prioritizes survival and profit over vendettas.
