Lore & Background
May 'Mayday' Parker is the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane Parker and the great-niece of Aunt May in the MC2 continuity. She was named after her father's aunt. After being kidnapped as a baby by Alison Mongraine on instruction from the Green Goblin, she was reunited with her parents by Kaine. Peter lost a leg in the final conflict with the Green Goblin and retired to focus on family. May began developing spider-powers at age 15 and donned Ben Reilly's Spider-Man costume to stop Normie Osborn, the grandson of the original Green Goblin. She soon took to crime-fighting, initially hindered then helped by her parents.
May shares traits of both parents: charismatic and popular like her mother, intelligent and witty like her father. She excelled in basketball until her powers manifested. Her superhero career began with successfully protecting her family, and she developed a reputation for reforming adversaries such as Normie Osborn and Raptor. She gained reserve status in the Avengers and allies in the New Warriors and Fantastic Five. In The Amazing Spider-Girl, she briefly quit but resumed her activities after Mary Jane allowed it. She later faced the Carnage symbiote, which bonded to her friend Moose and cousin Ben, ultimately destroying the symbiote piece with sonic weapons, though the attack left Ben deaf (later cured by Normie Osborn).
Reader's Guide
Mayday Parker's significance lies in her role as the first major legacy character of Spider-Man in an alternate future, and her series Spider-Girl broke ground as Marvel's longest-running superhero book with a lead female character. Despite low sales, an active fan base repeatedly saved the title from cancellation, leading to multiple relaunches as The Amazing Spider-Girl and The Spectacular Spider-Girl. The character's endurance across print, digital comics, and the 2023 film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (voiced by Michelle Ruff) cemented her as a beloved alternate-universe icon. Her stories often emphasize family dynamics, redemption of villains, and the challenges of balancing a secret identity with teenage life. Mayday's legacy includes her participation in major crossover events like Spider-Verse, Spider-Geddon, and End of the Spider-Verse, as well as her own digital series Unlimited Spider-Girl. She represents a successful expansion of the Spider-Man mythos into a female-led narrative that resonated with readers for over a decade.
