Background
For the third time, two clubs from the same country met in the UEFA Super Cup, after the all-Italian editions of 1990 and 1993. Barcelona made their sixth appearance in the Super Cup, having qualified by winning the 2005–06 UEFA Champions League final 2–1 against first-time finalists Arsenal at the Stade de France in Paris. Barcelona's first three Super Cup appearances, as UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners in 1979, 1982 and 1989, all ended in defeat.
They won their first Super Cup in their fourth attempt, beating Werder Bremen 3–2 on aggregate after claiming the European Cup in 1992, and added a second in 1997 as UEFA Cup Winners' Cup holders against Borussia Dortmund. Sevilla debuted in the Super Cup after winning the 2005–06 UEFA Cup 4–0 over Middlesbrough in the final at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, a title achieved in their sixth UEFA Cup participation. The only prior European meeting between the two clubs was in the third round of the 1995–96 UEFA Cup, which Barcelona won 4–2 on aggregate.
