Luna E-6 No.2

First Ye-6 lunar soft-lander, stranded by upper stage failure.

Luna E-6 No.2, also called No.1 and known in the West as Sputnik 25, was a Soviet spacecraft launched in 1963. It weighed 1500 kilograms and was the first of twelve Luna Ye-6 probes. A failure in its rocket's upper stage left it stranded in a useless orbit. The mission aimed to be the first to softly land on the Moon, a feat later achieved by the final Ye-6, Luna 9.
