FC Ural Yekaterinburg is a Russian professional association football club based in Yekaterinburg that plays in the Russian First League. The club was founded in 1930 and has been known as Avangard, Zenit, Mashinostroitel, and Uralmash.
It is currently named after the Russian region of Ural, where Yekaterinburg is the capital. The club participated in the Soviet championships beginning in 1945, mostly playing in the higher leagues. As Uralmash, they were the easternmost Russian SFSR club to compete in the third Soviet division.
History
Founded in 1930, the club has gone through several name changes: Avangard (1930–1948, 1953–1957), Zenit (1944–1946), Mashinostroitel (1958–1959), and Uralmash (1949–1952, 1960–2002). Its current name comes from the Ural region, whose capital is Yekaterinburg.
The team entered Soviet league play in 1945 and spent most of its time in the higher divisions, except for a single season in the lowest tier in 1969. As Uralmash, it was the easternmost Russian SFSR side in the third Soviet division; only FC Kairat from Alma-Ata, Kazakh SSR, was further east in the entire Soviet system. The club reached the Soviet Cup quarterfinals three times: 1965/66, 1967/68, and 1990/91.
After the Soviet Union dissolved, Uralmash earned a spot in the Russian Top Division and competed there from 1992 to 1996. Its best finishes were eighth place in 1993 and 1995. In 1996, the team made the Intertoto Cup semifinals but ended the league season 16th out of 18 and was relegated.
Another relegation followed in 1997, dropping the club to the Second Division, where it stayed from 1998 to 2002. After winning promotion, the club changed its name to Ural. The team was relegated from the First Division in 2003 but bounced back the next season; its highest First Division finish was third in 2006.
FC Ural reached its first Russian Cup final in 2017, losing to Lokomotiv Moscow. The same opponent defeated Ural again in the 2019 final.
In the 2023–24 season, Ural placed 13th and lost the relegation play-offs 2–3 on aggregate to Akron Tolyatti, ending an 11-year stay in the top flight. The following season, the team finished fourth in the First League and lost the promotion play-offs 2–3 to Akhmat Grozny. In the 2025–26 campaign, Ural again qualified for the promotion play-offs but fell 0–3 to Dynamo Makhachkala, remaining in the First League.
