Plot
A couple, Hee-yeon and Min-ho, along with their daughter Joon-hee, move to Mount Jang to live with Joon-hee’s grandmother, who suffers from senility. They hope the change will help her condition and allow the couple to recover from the loss of their son, who vanished five years earlier. The grandmother begins hearing the voice of her dead sister calling from the woods. Elsewhere, two children searching for their dog, which died in a car accident at the start of the story, hear barking and follow it to a brick wall. An invisible force pulls the girl through a gap in the wall, but she manages to get free. The kids run to Hee-yeon and Min-ho for assistance. Hee-yeon spots a little girl in the forest but is pulled away by the children and her husband, who goes through the hole and discovers a locked door. When he opens it, a mutilated woman falls out, already dead. They notify the police. That night, the mysterious girl shows up at their home, and Hee-yeon lets her stay. The girl calls Hee-yeon “Mom,” copies Joon-hee’s voice, and claims her name is also Joon-hee. Hee-yeon notices marks of abuse on the girl’s body. Min-ho feels uneasy about the girl and frustrated that Hee-yeon refuses to let go of their missing son. Police locate the man from the opening scene, who now hears voices and has vision problems; the entity kills him. The detective learns that Mount Jang has numerous unsolved disappearances, with victims reporting hearing voices of deceased loved ones before they vanished. He also finds a photograph from the 1980s showing a man with the same little girl Hee-yeon has taken in. The grandmother covers all the mirrors in the house with tape, saying that is how the entity enters. She eventually gives in to her sister’s voice and follows it to a cave behind the brick wall. Min-ho goes looking for her and also disappears. Hee-yeon asks a blind neighbor for help. The neighbor explains that long ago, a shaman lived in the area with his young daughter—the same girl now with Hee-yeon. The shaman, an outcast, willingly served a malevolent spirit called the Jangsan Tiger to gain power. He abused his daughter and slowly became possessed by the entity, eventually sacrificing her to satisfy the tiger. Now cursed, both the shaman and his daughter mimic voices to lure victims and offer them as sacrifices.
