Plot

Hae-won is a cold, competitive bank employee in Seoul who keeps people at arm’s length. After she sees a woman killed in a violent attack, she chooses not to identify the perpetrator, even when he later harasses her. At her office, a janitor accidentally locks her in a restroom; she assumes a coworker played a trick on her and slaps that coworker before learning the truth. Suspended from work, Hae-won takes a friend up on an offer to visit Mudo, a remote, underdeveloped island in the south where she grew up.

There, she is greeted warmly by Bok-nam, a childhood friend whose letters Hae-won has long ignored. Life on Mudo is harsh. Bok-nam is treated like a servant by her violent husband Man-jong, his predatory brother, and the other island women. Bok-nam’s only joy is her daughter Yeon-hee, and she tries to flee with her for a better future. But Man-jong is abusing and grooming Yeon-hee, which enrages Bok-nam. While trying to protect her mother from Man-jong, Yeon-hee is accidentally killed. Weeping, Bok-nam confesses that Yeon-hee might not be Man-jong’s child, as many local men have raped her.

A flashback shows young Hae-won teaching Bok-nam a tune on a recorder when four local boys start harassing them. Hae-won runs away and watches as the boys assault the unconscious Bok-nam.
