Lore & Background
The series originated after Marvel Games terminated their partnership with Activision in 2014, seeking a publisher with a vested interest in building a franchise. Sony Interactive Entertainment signed a development deal, and Insomniac Games was selected to acquire the Spider-Man license. The team chose Spider-Man due to the relatability of Peter Parker and the technical benefits of adapting traversal systems from their earlier game Sunset Overdrive. The first game, Marvel's Spider-Man, released on PlayStation 4 in 2018, followed by a remastered version for PlayStation 5 in 2020 and Windows in 2022. A spin-off, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, launched in 2020, and a sequel, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, released in 2023 for PlayStation 5. A Windows port of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has not been released as of the established canon. A third entry is in development.
Reader's Guide
The Marvel's Spider-Man series has been met with positive commercial success and critical acclaim, praised for its narratives, characters, world design, voice acting, graphics, and gameplay. It is set in a shared universe that includes other Insomniac-developed games, such as the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine (2026) and a standalone Venom game. The series has expanded through tie-in novels by Titan Books and comic books by Marvel Comics. Insomniac's version of Peter Parker appears in the comic event Spider-Geddon (2018), designating the series as Earth-1048 in the Marvel multiverse, and makes a cameo in the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023).
