Lore & Background

The Thievius Raccoonus is an ancient book containing the secrets of the Cooper Clan, a long line of master thieves. On Sly Cooper's 8th birthday, he was to inherit the book, but the Fiendish Five invaded his home, murdered his father, and stole pages from the book before spreading across the world. Sly later recovers the lost pages by defeating each member of the Fiendish Five and taking back their pages. After defeating the leader Clockwerk, Sly, Bentley, and Murray return to their hideout with the fully recovered Thievius Raccoonus.

In Their Own Story

Rain slicked the cobblestones outside the old library, and Sly crouched in the shadow of a gargoyle, watching the rival thief's goons shuffle past the entrance. Bentley's voice crackled in his ear: "Sly, the security loop resets in forty seconds. You've got your window." He pulled the Thievius Raccoonus from his satchel—leather-worn, pages soft with handling—and felt the weight of every ancestor who'd turned a lock with nothing but a hairpin and a grin. One more page to save. One more city to clean out. He grinned, flicked a smoke bomb, and vanished into the rain.

Reader's Guide

In the game, each sub-section of a lair contains clue bottles that, when collected, allow Sly to access a safe in the level that contains a page from the Thievius Raccoonus. These pages grant Sly new moves to aid in movement, stealth, or combat. Defeating each of the bosses also gives Sly moves.
