Hartigan's Sacrifice
One man's final stand protects a girl from the city's darkest power.
Hartigan's Sacrifice is the climactic conclusion of the six-issue limited series That Yellow Bastard, published by Dark Horse Comics from February to July 1996. In this final act of the Sin City saga, veteran policeman John Hartigan, suffering from severe angina, chooses suicide over capture after killing Roark Junior at the Roark Family Farm. Having rescued Nancy Callahan once again, Hartigan realizes that as long as he lives, Senator Roark will use her to exact vengeance for his son's death. Understanding that no sane attorney would prosecute the powerful Senator and that any legal battle would endanger Nancy, Hartigan determines there is only one way to end the ordeal. He takes his own life in an act of pure love, ensuring Nancy can escape Basin City safely while he eliminates the leverage Roark holds over her.

Lore & Background
The sacrifice occurs after Hartigan confronts and kills Roark Junior at the Farm. Junior had been resurrected with yellow skin and regrown limbs using new medical techniques, only to be castrated again by Hartigan before being beaten to death. Following the fight, Nancy and Hartigan share a passionate kiss before he tells her to flee, claiming he will call old police friends to clean up the crime scene. This is a lie; Hartigan knows Senator Roark will hunt him down and use Nancy as a pawn. With no legal recourse against the Senator's power, Hartigan decides to end the vendetta permanently. He narrates his final thoughts, explaining that he must die so Nancy can live free from the Roark family's reach. The act cements his role not just as a protector, but as a martyr who accepts death to break the cycle of corruption and abuse.
Reader's Guide
This event serves as the definitive end to Hartigan's arc in That Yellow Bastard, the sixth Sin City series published between February and July 1996. The story begins more than eight years before other books, establishing Hartigan's initial rescue of Nancy from Roark Junior. After being framed for rape and imprisoned, he survives solely on letters signed 'Cordelia' until the letters stop. Upon his release at age 60, he discovers the truth about the Yellow Bastard—a resurrected, yellow-skinned Roark Junior—and tracks him to Kadie's bar and eventually the Roark Family Farm.
The climax sees Hartigan enduring a severe angina attack while fighting corrupt police officers before killing Junior. His final decision to take his own life is driven by the certainty that Senator Roark would use Nancy to punish him. This sacrifice ensures her safety, contrasting sharply with the usual noir style of Sin City by introducing yellow hues for the antagonist and focusing on paternal love rather than revenge.
