Potionomics

A potion shop sim blending business, life, and dating sims.

Potionomics

Potionomics is a simulation game from developer Voracious Games and publisher Xseed Games. It blends business, life, and dating simulation genres. The game launched for Windows on October 17, 2022, and critics praised its depth and visual style, but pointed out the absence of voice acting.

The story follows a witch named Sylvia who inherits her uncle’s potion shop along with a debt. To clear it, she must train for a potion competition while running the shop to earn money, gather ingredients, and avoid losing the premises. Gameplay includes dating-sim elements, as players can build relationships with other vendors; a deck-building minigame for haggling over potion prices; and business management for the shop. Each day is divided into six time units used for brewing, selling, or other activities. Ingredients come from merchants or heroes and are combined using a system of balancing component ratios called magimins. More complex potions require rarer ingredients and additional magimin categories. Brewing takes multiple time units, but other actions can proceed during that period.

The soundtrack, composed by Greg Nicolett, features collaborations with artists including Artemisia, Patti Rudisill, Joni Fuller, Tina Guo, Kristin Naigus, and Ro Rowan. It contains 50 tracks—character themes, background music, and event pieces—spanning 1 hour and 38 minutes, with each track averaging about two minutes. Genres range from dubstep to bossa nova, blending orchestral and electronic sounds. Critics described the music as whimsical and catchy, evoking a magical fantasy atmosphere even for non-players.

The original Windows release arrived on October 17, 2022. On October 22, 2024, a console edition titled *Potionomics: Masterwork Edition* launched for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, alongside an update adding new difficulties, game modes, and voice acting.

The game earned an aggregate score of 80/100 on Metacritic, indicating generally favorable reviews. Tom Sykes of PC Gamer gave it 87/100, praising the card-based haggling as light, brisk, and charming, but calling potion-brewing exhausting. He compared the dating aspects to *Persona*, noted the expressive animation of vendors, and described their dialogue as comfortably tropey. He disliked the lack of voice acting, feeling it made the game feel muted.

Critics praised its card-based haggling battles as charming and its vendor characters as expressively animated, though some found the potion-brewing process laborious and the game overly long or stressful. The game was compared to Recettear and Persona, and was described as unique for combining disparate genres cohesively.
