Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 was announced at the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase on June 11, 2023. Developed by Asobo Studio with a team of over 200, the game was built as a standalone release that nonetheless aimed for compatibility with most add-ons from the 2020 title. Post-launch updates added granular library controls, allowing users to enable or disable ported 2020 Marketplace content item by item, with non-Microsoft ported content disabled by default until activated. The game also shifted more of its world and content pipeline toward streaming and the in-sim Marketplace, with free World and City scenery updates continuing after release.

The virtual world was substantially revised, with Microsoft describing the environmental detail as increasing by a factor of 4,000. Ground surfaces now include 3D-modeled stones, rocks, gravel, and grass that affect wheel behavior during takeoff, landing, and taxiing. New environmental features include wildfires, snow, tornadoes, auroras, animal migration and herds, live marine and flight tracking, four seasons, and improved ground traffic reporting. The simulator also includes an electronic flight bag for planning and flight-plan management, along with redesigned preflight flows allowing players to walk around aircraft and interact with covers, doors, and service items.

The game received generally positive reviews, with praise for its new features, enhanced visuals, and landscape streaming. However, launch day was marred by long loading times and missing content caused by high demand and server-side problems, leading to an overwhelmingly negative user-review rating on Steam. Flight Simulator head Jorg Neumann apologized in a developer video, and Asobo Studio CEO Sebastian Wloch explained that a database cache had been overwhelmed. Microsoft added additional server capacity and continued working on launch issues. The game later won Best Technological Innovation at the Pegases Awards in 2025 and was nominated for Visual Excellence.
