Football Manager 26

First Unity-based entry with mixed reception and record player count.

Football Manager 26

Football Manager 26 is a football management simulation from Sports Interactive and Sega, hitting Windows, macOS, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 on 4 November 2025. Mobile and Touch versions arrived through Netflix and Apple Arcade, with a Nintendo Switch edition following on 4 December 2025. It marks the series’ first use of the Unity engine and its first two-digit title. Development was extended after Football Manager 2025 was scrapped, and the game ended up with the franchise’s lowest Metacritic score, drawing mostly mixed or negative reactions at launch.

Players again take charge of a club, handling tactics, transfers, training, and finances. Unity powers the graphics and rendering, replacing Sports Interactive’s older in-house tools, which brought sharper matchday visuals—better animations, ball physics, and stadium lighting. The interface was rebuilt from scratch, adding bookmarks for easier navigation, though the core simulation—match engine, tactics, and player AI—still runs on SI’s own systems. Despite the engine switch, system requirements stay modest, working on older hardware while scaling up on modern GPUs.

Development originally aimed for Football Manager 25 to debut Unity, but in February 2025 the studio cancelled it, saying it didn’t meet quality standards. That gave the team more time to polish FM26. This entry is the first in the series to fully include women’s football, with over 35,000 licensed players and 14 playable leagues at launch. Fully licensed women’s competitions include the English Women’s Super League and Women’s Super League 2, the American NWSL, the German Frauen-Bundesliga, the Swedish Damallsvenskan, the Australian A-League Women, and the UEFA Women’s Champions League. For the first time, the game has full Premier League licensing, and it continues a long partnership with the English Football League, which began in 2004 and became official in 2014. In October 2025, the Scottish Professional Football League extended its deal, making all 42 SPFL clubs fully licensed with logos, kits, and player faces. New playable leagues debut for Egypt, Lithuania, and the United Arab Emirates, with full licences for Lithuania’s A Lyga and the UAE’s ADNOC Pro League.

International management, planned for FM26 after being cut from the cancelled FM25, wasn’t ready at launch.

Lore & Background

Sports Interactive originally planned to release Football Manager 25 as the first title on Unity, but cancelled it in February 2025, admitting the project did not meet internal quality standards. This allowed more time to polish features and optimise performance for FM26. The game fully integrates women's football for the first time, with over 35,000 licensed players and 14 playable leagues at launch, including the English Women's Super League, the NWSL, and the UEFA Women's Champions League. It also features full Premier League licensing and extended partnerships with the EFL and SPFL, as well as debut playable leagues in Egypt, Lithuania, and the United Arab Emirates.

International management, planned to return after being removed from the cancelled FM25, was not available at launch. Studio director Miles Jacobson confirmed in September 2025 that the mode was delayed to prioritise other areas. However, a multi-year partnership with FIFA secured official licences for the FIFA World Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. International management returned as a free update in May 2026, including men's and women's international management, a quick-start option for the 2026 World Cup, and the debut of the German national team. A second update in June 2026 added Japan as a playable nation and licensed kits for all 48 qualified teams.

Reader's Guide

Football Manager 26 represents a pivotal but troubled transition for the series. The move to the Unity engine brought improvements to matchday presentation, including enhanced animations, ball physics, and stadium lighting, while the user interface was rebuilt with new visual identity and bookmarks. However, the game received 'mixed or average' reviews from critics, with praise for the graphical upgrades but criticism for unpolished execution and a confusing new layout. User reviews on Steam were mostly negative, citing interface issues and performance problems. Despite this, the game became the second-most played in series history with 8 million players, though FM24 remains first with over 19 million. Sports Interactive announced in July 2026 that no further updates would be released for FM26, as the studio shifted focus to the next release. The game's legacy is one of a necessary but rocky engine transition, the landmark inclusion of women's football, and a delayed but ultimately delivered international management mode tied to official FIFA World Cup licensing.
