Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson often carry pistols with them to confront criminals. Watson's is his old service weapon, probably a Mark III Adams revolver of the kind issued to British troops during the 1870s.

Holmes and Watson shoot the hound in The Hound of the Baskervilles, and in "The Adventure of the Empty House" Watson pistol-whips Colonel Sebastian Moran. In "The Problem of Thor Bridge" Holmes uses Watson's revolver in an experiment that solves the case. Ballistics feature in "The Adventure of the Empty House", where spent bullets are recovered to be matched with a suspected murder weapon. The Tranter, a double-action cap and ball revolver invented around 1856 by the English firearms designer William Tranter, counts Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes among its noted users.
