Magia (Shakira album)

Shakira's debut album, a collection of youthful pop ballads.

Magia is the first studio album by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, released in June 1991 under Sony Music Colombia after she signed a three-album deal. The record compiles pop ballads that Shakira had written from the age of eight, drawing on themes like hanging out with boys, adventure stories, and dreams of coastal living. While live shows for the album brought her attention in Colombian media, it sold poorly—only an estimated 1,000 to 1,200 copies. At Shakira’s request, both Magia and her next album, Peligro (1993), were later pulled from stores.

Shakira, born in Barranquilla, started writing songs at eight, beginning with “Tus Gafas Oscuras.” Her local competition performances caught the eye of theater producer Monica Ariza, who arranged an audition in Bogotá. There, she sang three songs for Sony Music Colombia executives, who were impressed enough to sign the 13-year-old for three albums: Magia, Peligro, and Pies Descalzos. The low-budget Magia underwent nearly three months of pre-production, including choreography for live shows, singing lessons, and song arrangement. Though the label managed the project, the music still reflected Shakira’s personality. The tracks explore first-love emotions, ranging from a love poem (“Sueños”) to a dance celebration (“Esta Noche Voy Contigo”), influenced by experiences with her ex-boyfriend Oscar Pardo, stories from her father, and coastal dreams. In the book Shakira: Woman Full of Grace, Ximena Diego noted that the album “demonstrated her indisputable potential.”

The album contains eight songs plus a remix, five of which Shakira wrote between ages eight and thirteen. It consists mainly of pop ballads, produced by Miguel E. Cubillos and Pablo Tedeschi, and recorded at Aga Studios in Bogotá when Shakira was 13–14. A Sony Music Colombia representative said the recording process was simple and went perfectly, but Shakira found it problematic—she had no say in which tracks were included and no input into the rhythm or artistic production.

To promote the album, Shakira suggested live performances at venues like Teatro Amira de la Rosa, as well as in Cartagena, Santa Marta, Riohacha, Medellín, Cali, Bogotá, and other theaters and events, all covered by print, radio, and television. The shows featured dancers and background vocalists including César Navarro, Guillermo Gómez, Mauricio Pinilla, and Richard Ricardo.

Lore & Background

Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, Shakira began writing songs at age eight, her first being 'Tus Gafas Oscuras'. Her performances at local competitions led to a meeting with theater producer Monica Ariza, who later held an audition in Bogotá. Shakira performed three songs for executives of Sony Music Colombia, who signed her at age 13 to record three albums: Magia, Peligro, and Pies Descalzos. The low-budget Magia underwent nearly three months of pre-production, including choreography, singing lessons, and song arrangement. The tracks deal with first love and range from a love poem ('Sueños') to a celebration of dance ('Esta Noche Voy Contigo'), influenced by her ex-boyfriend Oscar Pardo, stories from her father, and dreams of living on the coast. The album was produced by Miguel E. Cubillos and Pablo Tedeschi, recorded at Aga Studios in Bogotá when Shakira was 13–14. Shakira had no ability to decide which tracks would be included and no input into the rhythmic structure or artistic production.

Reader's Guide

Magia holds significance as Shakira's first recorded work, marking the beginning of her career despite its limited commercial reach. The album demonstrated her potential as a songwriter, with five of its eight songs written between ages 8 and 13. Its live performances, held in venues across Colombia, garnered print, radio, and television coverage, helping to establish her presence in Colombian media. The album won an award at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival in 1991, though Shakira could not attend due to her age. However, Shakira later refused to allow re-releases of Magia and Peligro, citing their 'immaturity'. The album's legacy is thus one of a formative but disowned debut, illustrating the early development of an artist who would later achieve global fame. Its estimated sales of 1,000–1,200 copies underscore its status as a rare collector's item.
