Early life
Alejandro Sanz was born on 18 December 1968, the youngest child of María Pizarro and Jesús Sánchez. He grew up in the Moratalaz neighborhood of eastern Madrid. As a child, he played guitar and sang for his friends, which kept him out of trouble. His father, a door-to-door book salesman, had been a professional guitarist and inspired Sanz to learn the instrument at age seven. He practiced so intensely that his mother once broke his guitar because his playing kept the family awake. Each summer, he vacationed in Andalusia, where he was exposed to traditional flamenco. He initially wanted to become a flamenco performer but found the teachers overly strict and felt he could not compete with his peers. He decided instead to create pop music with flamenco influences, viewing flamenco as a lifestyle better suited to others.
Musical style
Early in his career, Sanz's music consisted mainly of romantic ballads. In the late 1990s, collaborations with other artists expanded his style. On No Es lo Mismo, he experimented with rock, salsa, and hip hop, often entering the studio with a rough idea and letting guest artists add their rhythms. El Tren de los Momentos continued this experimentation, incorporating funk, jazz, and country. Despite this, Allmusic noted that Sanz never strayed far from romantic ballads tinged with flamenco. He is known for his raspy vocals, which he attributes to his flamenco roots and credits singer Camarón de la Isla as a major influence. His song "Sí, He Cantado Mal" references his self-critical humor. As a youth, he was heavily influenced by heavy metal groups like Iron Maiden and Dio. He also credits living in Cádiz, where music is part of daily life, as a major influence.
