Reception
Extreme PaintBrawl received extremely negative reviews. Critics pointed to its use of the obsolete Build engine, a lack of game modes beyond capture the flag, maps that did not resemble actual paintball fields, an unfitting soundtrack, and a practice mode with no enemies or targets. The AI was criticized for bizarre behavior, such as teammates getting stuck near doors or standing still, yet exhibiting perfect aim. Marc Dultz of GameSpot gave it a 1.7/10, calling it out of touch with reality and one of the worst games in years.
Raphael Liberatore of Computer Gaming World noted performance issues and a poor graphical user interface, rating it one out of five stars. Tal Blevins of IGN gave it a 0.7/10, the second-lowest score the site has ever given, remarking that only the soundtrack could be described as extreme. Richard Cobbett of PC Gamer named it one of the 15 worst PC games of all time in 2010, citing a lack of functional AI, multiplayer code that could not connect, characters walking through walls, and no sense of fun.
Sequels
Extreme PaintBrawl 2 was released for Microsoft Windows on November 15, 1999, developed by Hoplite Research and published by Head Games. It used a modified Genesis3D engine and was criticized for AI where teammates constantly ran into walls. IGN gave it a 2.6/10. Extreme PaintBrawl 4, developed by Cat Daddy Games and published by Activision Value, was released on May 13, 2002, as a re-release of Ultimate PaintBrawl 3. It received negative reviews for outdated graphics and a broken multiplayer mode, with GameSpot scoring it 2.4/10 and IGN 4.0/10.
