Young Genichiro Ashina
A prodigy's ambition to save his clan turned into a desperate grasp for power.
Young Genichiro Ashina refers to the formative years of one of Sekiro's primary antagonists, depicted through lore items and memories within the game world. As the adoptive grandson of Kensei Isshin Ashina, his early life was defined by rigorous training and a deep-seated desire to protect his clan from external threats. Unlike the Divine Heir he would later pursue, Genichiro sought power as a means of preservation rather than liberation. During the late Sengoku period, the Ashina clan seized a land rich in divine favor, including a foreign deity dubbed the Divine Dragon which could grant immortality through a bloodline called the "Dragon's Heritage" and through the Rejuvenating Waters and its mukade-infested Sediment.

Lore & Background
Genichiro is the adoptive grandson of Kensei Isshin Ashina, who led the Ashina clan in seizing a land rich in divine favor during the late Sengoku period. Two decades before the game's events, the now-elderly Isshin was on his deathbed and the weakened Ashina was besieged by the forces of the Interior Ministry to finish the unification of Japan. Desperate to save his clan, Genichiro sought Kuro to use his blood to create an immortal army. Disagreeing with his grandson's methods, Isshin had his private physician, Emma, warn Wolf so the two could flee.
Genichiro confronted them and defeated Wolf in a duel, severing his left arm and capturing Kuro. Later, after Sekiro defeats Genichiro in a second duel, Genichiro survives, having used the Sediment from the Rejuvenating Waters to gain corrupted immortality, and escapes. In the final confrontation, upon defeat, Genichiro sacrifices himself using the second Mortal Blade to revive Isshin in his prime so he might restore Ashina, a wish that his grandfather attempts to honor despite disagreeing with it.
Reader's Guide
Genichiro Ashina is the adoptive grandson of Kensei Isshin Ashina and a skilled swordsman trained from childhood. His ambition was to preserve the clan's strength against the besieging Interior Ministry forces. He grew up in the shadow of his grandfather's legendary reputation, striving to prove his own worth as the heir to the Ashina legacy. In his youth, he viewed the Dragon's Heritage not as a curse but as a tool for protection.
This belief separated him from Kuro, who sought to sever the bloodline. Genichiro believed control of the power was necessary for survival against the enemies surrounding them. His path led him to seize the Divine Heir and challenge Wolf directly at Ashina Castle. After Sekiro defeats him, Genichiro survives by using the Sediment from the Rejuvenating Waters to gain corrupted immortality.
In the final confrontation, upon defeat, Genichiro sacrifices himself using the second Mortal Blade to revive Isshin in his prime so he might restore Ashina. His skills with both blade and firearm were honed early for this purpose.
