Lore & Background

Three years before the main events, Kuro's home was raided by bandits led by the shinobi Lady Butterfly. During this raid, Owl appeared to be killed. Wolf confronted and defeated Lady Butterfly, but was then fatally stabbed by an unknown assailant—later revealed to be Owl, who had faked his death. Wolf only survived because Kuro shared his blood with him, granting him the Dragon's Heritage. Lady Butterfly's role is thus tied to the betrayal that set Wolf on his path.

Reader's Guide

Lady Butterfly is an optional boss encountered when Sekiro revisits his past through meditation. She led the bandits who raided Kuro's home three years prior. Defeating her is part of that memory sequence, after which Sekiro is stabbed by the unknown assailant (later revealed to be Owl). The fight is a key moment in the backstory, explaining how Wolf gained the Dragon's Heritage.
