Nothing, Forever was conceived in 2019 by Skyler Hartle, a product manager at Microsoft Azure, and Brian Habersberger, a polymer physicist, who met playing Team Fortress 2. Inspired by David Lynch's web series Rabbits, the project began as a surreal art piece and evolved into a generative media show. Mismatch Media formed in 2022 with collaborators including Jakob Broaddus, Zale Bush, Nic Freeman, Edward Garmon, Xander Reade, and Stanley Janoski. The first season featured characters Larry Feinberg, Yvonne Torres, Fred Kastopolous, and Zoltan Kakler, parodies of the Seinfeld cast. Viewers could interact via Twitch chat, influencing the narrative. A fictitious 1990s-style electronic program guide interrupted the show while new scripts were generated.

The show used GPT-3 (Davinci model) for dialogue, with backup from the less sophisticated Curie model. Other technologies included Stable Diffusion, DALL-E, Azure Cognitive Services, Unity, and C#. Funding came from a Patreon, with a top tier allowing viewer character appearances. On February 6, 2023, the Twitch channel received a 14-day suspension after a standup routine by the Feinberg character included offensive jokes about transgender people and the gay agenda. The creators attributed the incident to an outage of the Davinci model, forcing a switch to Curie, whose content moderation tools failed. They implemented additional guardrails and returned on March 8. The second season debuted with new characters—Leo Borges, Nick Sterling, Kelly Coffee, and Manfred Fredman—and an original format where Leo began episodes by writing on his blog.
