Development
Super Skidmarks was developed by New Zealand-based Acid Software, predominantly designed and written by Chris Blackbourn. Originally intended as an expanded version of Skidmarks with new tracks and a track editor, it evolved into a full sequel, though the final game lacked a track editor. The original game's disk accessing problems and crashes were addressed, partly through hard drive installation. The sequel includes twice the number of tracks, more vehicles and competitions, and a more difficult single-player mode with improved artificial intelligence. A three-way split screen or four-player whole-screen mode inspired by Micro Machines was added, along with support for multiple joysticks. Players can attach a caravan to their vehicle, affecting handling. A Mega Drive conversion was published by Codemasters.
Reception
The widescreen link mode, supporting up to eight players, was described as elevating the game to near divine status, though it required two A1200 computers, limiting its audience. The A1200 version received a higher score from one publication, which later ranked the game 24th best of all time. Another magazine praised the humorous vehicle selection, including cows, caravans, Volkswagens, and Minis, and noted the simple but enjoyable graphics, though the menus could have been more user-friendly. It was called one of the most playable and fun racing games. A third outlet deemed it nigh on perfect, a completely social sport best realized on a computer, and strongly recommended buying it. The wheeled cows were called tremendous fun by another reviewer, who mentioned a steep learning curve but still considered it one of the best games of the year. Another source described it as brilliant fun in thoroughly unrealistic racing. The game was a best-seller in the UK.
