Blitz, a large blue bird, serves as the official mascot for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League’s National Football Conference. He first appeared on September 13, 1998, during the team’s home opener at the Kingdome in Seattle, Washington. Over time, Blitz’s look underwent several minor adjustments, including color tweaks to match the team’s updated design after moving to Qwest Field in 2002. A major redesign in 2004 aimed to make him less intimidating to children by softening his facial features. In 2014, another update gave Blitz a face more closely resembling the Seahawks logo, adding piercing green eyes and a blue-and-gray head. He remains a medium-height, blue anthropomorphic bird wearing a Seahawks uniform with the number 0. That same year, a second mascot, Boom, was introduced as Blitz’s official sidekick. Boom has green eyes, green hair, a backwards Seahawks cap, and a number 00 uniform. Since 1998, Blitz has been a key part of the Seahawks’ “Ready, Set, Goals!” children’s reading program. Beyond all home games, he appears at hundreds of community and charity events each year, and has made appearances at the Super Bowl and Pro Bowl. The band The Presidents of the United States of America recorded his theme song, “This Is a Blitz.”
