The race was shortened to 29 of its scheduled 75 laps after a crash by Rolf Stommelen killed four people. Jochen Mass won his only Formula One race, driving a McLaren M23. Lella Lombardi became the first and only woman to score points in the World Championship, earning 0.5 points as the race was stopped before 60% completion.

The heat radiated off the Spanish asphalt as Niki Lauda adjusted his gloves inside the cockpit. The engine roared to life, a V12 symphony echoing through the Jarama hills. He could feel the grip of the tires, knowing this car was different from anything before it. As the lights went out, he didn't hesitate. The red blur surged forward, leaving the dust behind.
