Spartans spent most of their history in the East of Scotland League, winning their first championship in 1971–72 and eventually claiming nine league titles. They also finished runners-up seven times. The club won the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup ten times, the East of Scotland Cup (City Cup) three times, and the East of Scotland League Cup four times. In November 2008, Spartans moved to a new purpose-built home at Ainslie Park, which included a 504-seater stand and floodlights.
Later that year, the club applied for entry into the Scottish Football League after Gretna relinquished their status, but lost out to Annan Athletic. In 2009–10, Spartans won a quadruple: the East of Scotland Premier Division, the SFA South Challenge Cup, the King Cup, and the League Cup. They won a third consecutive league title in 2010–11 and also defeated Edinburgh City 3–0 in the SFA South Challenge Cup final at Tynecastle Park. The following season they lost the league on goal difference to Stirling University, and in 2012–13 they finished third.
Lowland Football League (2013–2023)
Spartans joined the newly formed Lowland Football League for 2013–14 and won the inaugural championship, finishing four points ahead of Stirling University. They were runners-up in 2015–16 and won the Lowland League Cup in 2016–17. In 2017–18, Spartans won a second Lowland League title and entered the Pyramid play-off, losing 5–2 on aggregate to Cove Rangers. In the Pyramid play-offs, they beat Brechin City 4–3 on penalties and then defeated Albion Rovers 2–1 on aggregate, with Blair Henderson scoring the decisive penalty at Cliftonville Stadium.
