Plot
The story is set in Mill Valley, California, where seeds from space grow into plantlike pods. These pods replace sleeping people with perfect physical duplicates that share all memories but lack emotion. The duplicates live only five years and cannot reproduce, threatening to turn Earth into a dead planet. One duplicate argues this mirrors human behavior of consuming resources and destroying ecosystems.
Adaptations
The novel has been adapted for the screen four times: in 1956, 1978, 1993, and 2007. It also inspired the 1998 film The Faculty and the 2019 film Assimilate. Unlike the first three film adaptations, which have darker dystopian narratives, the novel ends optimistically with the aliens voluntarily leaving after encountering resistance, leaving behind a small population of duplicates that soon die.
Critical reception
The novel is often compared to Robert Heinlein's The Puppet Masters, published three years earlier. Damon Knight criticized its scientific incoherence. John Clute remarked on the novel in The Science Fiction Encyclopedia. Groff Conklin faulted its lack of originality, while Anthony Boucher found it intensely readable and unpredictably ingenious despite inconsistencies. P. Schuyler Miller described it as a straight chase yarn with several gimmicks and a not entirely convincing denouement.
