Development for a Sonic film began in 1993, when Michealene Risley of Sega of America negotiated with Hollywood producers. In August 1994, Sega struck a deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Trilogy Entertainment Group for a film titled Sonic the Hedgehog: Wonders of the World, which was later cancelled. In 2002, Ben Hurst pitched an animated Sonic film to DIC Entertainment, but writer Ken Penders alerted Sega, leading to Hurst's dismissal. Penders then pitched his own concept, Sonic Armageddon, which was dropped in 2007. In 2013, Sony Pictures acquired the rights, and in 2014 a live-action animated film was announced as a joint venture with Marza Animation Planet. After Sony put the film in turnaround, Paramount Pictures acquired the rights in October 2017. The first film was released in February 2020 after a redesign delay, followed by a sequel in 2022 and a third film in 2024.
