Rob Lineberger of DVD Verdict said the show's writing uses clichés in the blandest ways.[1] David Nusair of Reel Film wrote that the show abandons elements that made previous Highlander entries successful.[2]
Making and release
Anchor Bay Entertainment and Davis-Panzer Productions released all 22 episodes of Highlander: The Raven in a nine-disc DVD set.[2] The set includes commentary tracks on four episodes and a lengthy behind-the-scenes documentary.[2] David Abramowitz, a producer, said the chemistry between the leads was dead and that a casting mistake might have been made.[1] Abramowitz also said he was drained working on the set and compared the experience to the mythic labor of Sisyphus.[1]
The show revolved around the unlikely teaming of a grizzled ex-cop and an Immortal.[2] Lineberger noted that the producers introduced potential actresses to play the Raven in Season Six of Highlander: The Series.[1]
What the cited sources add
Lineberger praised the episode "War and Peace" for recapturing classic Highlander through flashbacks and moral questions.[1] He said Elizabeth Gracen is a poised, charismatic woman who creates winning moments in the show.[1] Lineberger described the show's visual style as a watermark but found the net effect distasteful and distracting.[1] He noted that digital artifacts on the DVD are not as bad as in Highlander: The Series.[1]
Lineberger stated that the creative team abandoned elements that made Highlander: The Series effective.[1] He also wrote that the show's style is off, the music awkward, and the direction formless.[1]
