Massive Monster Mayhem

Kids battle giant monsters to save Earth.

Last updated

Massive Monster Mayhem is a Canadian television game show that blends live-action footage with computer-generated animation. It first aired on Family Channel and TeenNick on October 23, 2017, and later began broadcasting on Nickelodeon and CITV in the UK and Ireland on February 26, 2018, with the CITV premiere occurring on March 5, 2018. The show was created by Artur Spigel and Michael Chaves.

Premise

Each episode opens with the evil intergalactic overlord Master Mayhem threatening to destroy Earth. Three child contestants then compete in a series of futuristic challenges for a chance to battle one of Master Mayhem’s giant monsters, which are wreaking havoc on the planet.

The kids play live-action games against these Monster Superstars to win prizes and save Earth. When a monster is unleashed, an announcer describes it, including its home planet, side jobs, and hobbies. The episodes also include comedic segments featuring Master Mayhem in his space condo on another planet.

The gameplay consists of three rounds. In the Megalator, players run through a futuristic obstacle course, and the two with the fastest times advance. The group that builds the Megalator changes each episode.

In the Mega Duel, the remaining two players compete in a duel, and the one with the most points moves on. The final round, the Mash Down, takes place in Mega City. The player must fight the Monster Superstar, break Prize Buildings, and collect Power Pods to throw into the Mega Laser’s Mega Reactor, which sends the monster back to Master Mayhem’s world.

Before being enlarged to 600 feet, the player chooses a battle suit that provides a special advantage: the Mega Money Suit doubles the prizes, the Mega Ice Suit freezes the monster for five seconds when the player says “Freeze!”, the Mega Hammer Suit lets the player knock down the monster and search for power pods by saying “HAMMER!”, and the Mega Tank Suit allows the player to find two pods but slows them down. During the fight, Boom Buildings, if destroyed, cause all prize money to be lost. The player can also obtain a Mayhem Pod to summon a rival Monster Superstar to fight the featured monster for 20 seconds.

Gameplay & Competition Structure

The competition unfolds across three distinct rounds. The first, called the Megalator, sends contestants through a futuristic obstacle course; the two fastest players advance. The second, the Mega Duel, pits those two against each other in a head-to-head challenge, with the higher scorer moving on to the finale.

The climax, the Mash Down, takes place in the fictional Mega City, where the remaining contestant is enlarged to 600 feet and must battle the Monster Superstar, destroy Prize Buildings, and collect Power Pods to load into the Mega Laser's reactor. Before the fight, players choose a battle suit: the Mega Money Suit doubles their prize, the Mega Ice Suit freezes the monster for five seconds, the Mega Hammer Suit lets them knock the creature down, and the Mega Tank Suit grants extra pod-finding ability at the cost of speed. Boom Buildings pose a risk—if destroyed, all accumulated prize money is forfeited.

A Mayhem Pod can also summon a rival monster for a 20-second distraction. Prize money ranges from $100 to $1,000. In special highlight episodes, the first two rounds are replaced by clips, and two monsters battle each other directly, with RoBro holding the record for the most such encounters.

Characters & Monster Roster

Master Mayhem, the show's central antagonist, is an evil intergalactic overlord who schemes to destroy Earth while remaining bound by the rules of the Intergalactic Battle Alliance. He resides in a space condo on an unnamed planet, where comical skits show his daily life, often filmed by his unseen assistant and cameraman, Kyle.

His successful brother Carl is frequently referenced throughout the series and makes a rare physical appearance in the episode titled "The Overlord Awards." The Mayor of Mega City, portrayed by Dana Schiemann, serves as a recurring comic figure who is repeatedly injured by the Monster Superstars while attempting to promote local attractions. The Monster Superstars themselves are a diverse cast: RoBro is a fitness-obsessed Buff Bot from the planet Dumbbell with a Mayhem Level of 8; Dome Diddy Dome is a robotic Vessel of Vengeance from Randome whose dome brings objects to life; and Teensy the Tri-Terror-Tops hails from the planet Dinorrhea. Each monster carries a designated Mayhem Level, and in highlight episodes, RoBro, Macho Cheese, and Teensy have all participated in monster-versus-monster Mash Downs.

Production, Hosts & Broadcast

Massive Monster Mayhem was created by Artur Spigel and Michael Chaves, with Spigel also providing the voice for the show's announcer, who narrates Monster Superstar introductions and describes Mega City. The on-screen co-hosts are Graham Conway and Devon Deshaun Stewart, both appearing as themselves. Thomas Lorber physically portrays both Master Mayhem and his brother Carl, while Daniel Davies supplies the voice for both characters. The Monster Superstars are brought to life by individual performers: Aiden Coleman plays RoBro, Ben Van Hues performs Dome Diddy Dome, and Kai Ferris takes on Teensy, with Jon Davis voicing that particular character.

The series first aired on October 25, 2017, on Canada's Family Channel and TeenNick. It later expanded its reach, beginning broadcasts on Nickelodeon and the UK and Ireland's CITV on February 26, 2018. The production combines practical live-action performance with computer-generated animated elements to realize its premise of giant monsters clashing with enlarged human contestants in Mega City.
