On Mars, Victra's ship is attacked by Ascomanni seeking Volga, Ragnar's daughter. Ephraim, Pax, and Electra are captured by Sefi's Obsidians. Sefi is poisoned by agents of Volsung Fá and needs Volga as heir. The Obsidian Volsung Fá's loyalists kill Sefi and unleash Obsidians on Martian cities. Ephraim is shot by Volsung Fá after attempting to detonate a bomb. Lysander escapes Atlas, uses PulseShield/PulseArmor technology to cripple Darrow's forces, kills Alexandar, and leads a rebellion. Darrow and his commanders are rescued by Cassius, who pledges to the Republic. Virginia returns to Mars and gains emergency powers. Volga surrenders to Fá to save Mars. On Mercury, Lysander publicly acknowledges Atalantia's authority and proposes marriage. Kalindora reveals Octavia ordered the murder of Lysander's parents. Lysander secretly allies with Apollonius to reestablish the Society with himself as Sovereign.
