Joseph James Pavelski (born July 11, 1984) is an American former professional ice hockey player who spent 18 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars. He is widely considered one of the greatest Sharks in franchise history, having captained the team to its first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 2016. He later reached the Finals again with Dallas in 2020.
Pavelski played college hockey for the Wisconsin Badgers after attending the University of Wisconsin, then was selected 205th overall in the seventh round of the 2003 NHL Draft by San Jose. He spent his first 13 NHL seasons with the Sharks, serving as captain for his final four years there. Nicknamed "Little Joe" and "Captain America," he scored a goal in his very first NHL game, becoming the 11th Sharks player to do so. He holds the record for most playoff goals by an American-born player, with 74. After leaving San Jose as a free agent, he played his final five seasons with the Dallas Stars.
Internationally, Pavelski won a silver medal with the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and captained Team USA at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto.
Born in Plover, Wisconsin, to Sandy and Mike Pavelski, his family is of Polish origin, with the surname originally spelled Pawelski. He grew up with three siblings; his younger brother, Scott, was a four-year student-athlete but never played professionally.
In his amateur career, Pavelski won a Wisconsin State Hockey Championship with SPASH in 2002, a Clark Cup with the Waterloo Black Hawks in 2004, and the USHL Dave Tyler Junior Player of the Year Award that same year. At the University of Wisconsin, he played 84 games over two seasons (2004–06), recording 101 points (39 goals, 62 assists). He was named to the All-WCHA Rookie Team in 2005, the All-WCHA Second Team, and the Men's RBK Division I West All-America Second Team. He helped Wisconsin win the 2006 NCAA Division I championship while leading the team in points.
Pavelski began his NHL career in 2006–07, scoring a goal in his debut and tallying 7 goals and 10 points in his first 12 games.
