He has been with the team since at least 1958, when the Padres still played in the minor-league Pacific Coast League, and is named for the Spanish Franciscan friars who founded Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the settlement the city grew around in the 18th century. The club kept him when it joined Major League Baseball in 1969, and he appeared on the team emblem until 1984, when the owners switched to a more corporate logo.
