Lore & Background
It grew out of the wider economic rivalry between Los Angeles and San Diego, sharpened by the NFL's Chargers and NBA's Clippers both leaving San Diego for Los Angeles. The Dodgers have historically been far more successful, and most of the hostility comes from San Diego fans, shown in the "Beat LA" chant the club and its fans have embraced. Dodgers fans have tended to see the Giants as their real rival, though that view has likely shifted since the Padres' aggressive roster building from 2020.
