Star Inspector (Russian: Звёздный инспектор, romanized: Zvyozdniy inspektor) is a 1980 Soviet science fiction film directed by Mark Kovalyov and Vladimir Polin. The story begins when an unidentified combat spacecraft, later revealed to be the "Antares" owned by the company "Meinthaus", attacks and destroys a base belonging to the International Space Inspectorate without clear motive. Inspector Sergei Lazarev is assigned to investigate and travels to the scene aboard the patrol ship Vaigach with his colleagues. The inspectors discover that the attack is linked to the mysterious disappearance of a group of scientists led by biologist Augusto Michelli several years earlier. Working in utmost secrecy for Meinthaus, these scientists had completed a working model of an artificial brain. This artificial intelligence broke free from control and enslaved its creators. It then attempts to seize the brains of the Vaigach crew, but the crew possesses the "Orlov effect", which provides protection against kappa radiation for a three-hour period.
