Plot
In the near-distant future, a Roscosmos space expedition of four astronauts travels to Mars. Three crewmembers return to Earth, leaving captain Alexander Chapaev alone on the planet. He marks his days with the help of radio communication with Earth and a robotic drone. On Earth, efforts to bring him home become mired in quarrels between the government and the space agency. A private investor offers assistance, but it is a hoax: the company sending supplies turns his broadcast into a reality show with no intention of retrieving him. Chapaev, cut off from his family, experiences hallucinations and encounters a sentient Mars lifeform. The film ends with Chapaev unable to distinguish reality from unreality, and hints that the entire mission was staged to boost TV ratings.
Reception
Forsaken was a box office bomb, grossing about 15 million Russian rubles ($206,000 US) against a budget of 350 million rubles ($4,800,000 US). It was considered the worst-grossing film in Russian film history until surpassed by Spitak later that year. In 2019, Fond Kino issued a statement officially apologizing for allocating taxpayer money to the production. The allocation of federal funds for films that fail at the box office is seen by Russians as part of government corruption.
