Reception

Critics widely praised Death Is Nothing to Us upon its release. Andrew Sacher of BrooklynVegan named it a pick of the week, noting it contained the band's most melodic and hook-filled songs alongside some of their hardest-hitting material. Sacher later ranked it among the top ten emo and post-hardcore albums of the year, as well as one of the 50 best punk albums of the year. In Exclaim!, Adam Feibel gave the album an 8 out of 10, highlighting how it combined melody and intensity into music that is both intellectually and emotionally engaging. David Renshaw of The Fader also selected it as a pick of the week, describing the album as nuanced for its exploration of mourning's emotional complexities, culminating in what he called a moment of pitch-black positivity. Mischa Pearlman of Kerrang! scored it a 4 out of 5, summarizing that the album turns death into both everything and nothing by reminding listeners that even after we are gone, we persist in the minds and memories of those who love us. Matt Mitchell of Paste characterized the work as dense, thoughtful, and ambitious. Pitchfork's Nina Corcoran gave the album a 7.6 out of 10, praising the band's restraint in prioritizing nimble bass and guitar work; she later used the album to illustrate how American hardcore punk embraced experimentation and cross-genre elements in 2023. Cogwheel of PunkNews rated it 4 out of 5 stars, citing emotional growth through grief and top-notch musicianship. Revolver singled out the tracks Sleepyhead and Sullenboy for praise. Two critics from Uproxx voted the album among the best of 2023. Writing for WBUR-FM, Karen Muller included it in the station's list of best local albums of the year, noting that vocalist Pat Flynn's roar embodies pain while rallying against it, often within the same track.
