Lore & Background

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is set hundreds of years after the events of Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. The story begins in the kingdom of Ding Dong Dell, home to the cat-like Grimalkin and mouse-like Mousekin races, where the young heir Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum prepares to assume the throne after his father's death. A coup by the advisor Mausinger forces Evan to flee with Roland Crane, a president from Earth who has been transmigrated into a younger form. Together, they seek a Kingmaker—a powerful being bonded to a ruler—to establish a new kingdom called Evermore.

Reader's Guide

The game's significance lies in its blend of traditional role-playing elements with kingdom management mechanics. Players freely navigate an open world from a third-person perspective, completing quests and exploring towns, villages, and dungeons. Battles take place on open fields where players control one of three party members, switching between them at will, while the other two characters fight autonomously. Combat uses melee attacks, magical abilities, and Higgledies—elemental creatures that grant spells and bonuses. Outside of combat, players build and manage Evan's kingdom, arranging workforces to produce materials and shops. The narrative explores themes of unity and redemption as Evan gathers allies from four major realms—Goldpaw, Hydropolis, Broadleaf, and Ding Dong Dell—to sign a Declaration of Interdependance and confront the antagonist Doloran, who seeks to revive his lost kingdom and his Kingmaker, the Horned One. The game received generally positive critical reception and sold over 900,000 copies worldwide by May 2018.
