Megadimension Neptunia VII

Neptune and Nepgear cross dimensions to save two worlds from ruin.

Megadimension Neptunia VII

Megadimension Neptunia VII, a 2015 role-playing game in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series from Idea Factory, first came out on PlayStation 4 before being ported to Windows and later Nintendo Switch. It picks up after Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory, with Neptune and her sister Nepgear getting pulled from the Hyper Dimension into the ruined Zero Dimension. There they meet Uzume Tennouboshi, a local CPU, and work together to take down the giant Dark CPUs and find a way home, eventually uncovering a plot that endangers both dimensions.

The battle system here is built around a new combo structure, though it keeps some similarities to earlier games. Positioning characters on the field matters a lot. Each goddess can access a "Next Form," an extra transformation on top of her usual goddess form, which changes both her fighting style and personality. Fights use a four-member party in a "Unit Turn-based" system: when it's your turn, you pick a character and move them freely across the battlefield.

At the Guild in a city, you take quests from various people. Completing a quest means fulfilling its requirements and then reporting back, which earns you items, Credits, and raises each nation's shares.

The story splits into three chapters, each set in a different dimension with its own title.

**Zero Dimension Neptunia Z: Twilight of the Desperate CPU** Peace has settled over Gamindustri, but Histoire, Planeptune's Oracle, warns Neptune and Nepgear about the upcoming "CPU Shift Period," where the public might replace their CPUs with newcomers. Before they can prepare, the pair find an old video game console that sends them to the monster-infested Zero Dimension. There they meet Uzume, a CPU who has also lost her transformation powers because Shares (faith from the people) are gone. The three search for Share Crystals to regain their strength and reclaim the land. Uzume has strange abilities that sometimes kick in when the party is in trouble, but she has amnesia—she remembers nothing of her people or what destroyed her world, only suspecting the Dark CPUs, especially Dark Purple. Her powers let the party gain Shares from friendly monsters and eventually seal Dark Purple in a pocket dimension called the Sharing Field.

Nepgear builds a device to send herself and Neptune home, but Arfoire, a destructive CPU-like being, attacks the facility.

Lore & Background

The game is separated into three individual chapters with different stories for each dimension. In Zero Dimension Neptunia Z: Twilight of the Desperate CPU, Neptune and Nepgear are warned by Histoire of the upcoming 'CPU Shift Period' before stumbling across an old video game console that transports them to the ruined Zero Dimension. They meet Uzume Tennouboshi, a CPU with amnesia who believes giants known as Dark CPUs destroyed her world. The trio locate Share Crystals to regain their powers and eventually seal Dark Purple in a pocket dimension called the Sharing Field. After Arfoire attacks, an alternate older Neptune helps them, and the party defeats a fused Arfoire-Dark Purple entity, creating a cross-dimensional portal that returns Neptune and Nepgear home.

In Hyper Dimension Neptunia G: The Golden Leaders, Reconstructors of Gamindustri, the CPUs hold a festival to regain public faith during the CPU Shift Period, but are interrupted by a group called Gold Third who defeat them and take over the four nations. The CPUs awaken to find the public has forgotten them. Each CPU investigates their nation: Neptune reunites with IF and Compa, battles AffimaX, and deals with B-Sha; Noire returns to Lastation as a wanted criminal, befriends K-Sha, and faces The Order; Blanc is rescued by C-Sha in Lowee and learns of a harsh class system. The chapter follows each CPU's separate struggles against Gold Third members and the criminal syndicate AffimaX.

Reader's Guide

Megadimension Neptunia VII is notable for introducing a new battle system with a different combo structure that emphasizes character positioning. Each goddess has a 'Next Form', an additional transformation phase beyond existing goddess transformations that changes both combat style and personality. Battles use a four-member party 'Unit Turn-based' system where players can move freely within the battlefield on their turn. The Guild system allows players to accept quests from various people, completing them for items, Credits, and increased shares for each nation. The game's three-chapter structure presents distinct stories for each dimension, with unique titles for each chapter. The plot involves dimension-hopping, amnesiac CPUs, and a scheme that threatens both the Hyper Dimension and Zero Dimension. The game was released on PlayStation 4 in 2015 and later ported to Windows and Nintendo Switch, continuing the series' tradition of satirizing video game industry tropes through its CPU characters and their struggles over public faith (Shares).
