Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2
A sequel removing random encounters, with a new world and upgraded cutscenes.
Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, a role-playing game from 2011, is the second entry in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. It was made by Idea Factory and Compile Heart. The game brings back some characters and adds new ones, and its gameplay no longer uses random enemy encounters. It includes fresh maps and an entirely new world, and its cutscenes have been improved over the 2D visual novel style used in the first game. A portable remaster, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation, came out for the PlayStation Vita globally in 2014–2015 and later for Windows. The next game in the series, Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory, followed in 2012.
In dungeons, players can search for treasure or perform a Symbol Attack. Pressing a button scans the area for hidden items. Enemies now wander the map; when they spot the player, a red exclamation mark appears, and they give chase. Hitting an enemy with a Symbol Attack gives the player’s party an advantage, and sometimes defeats the enemy outright, though no rewards are given in that case. If an enemy approaches from behind, a Back Attack starts, giving the enemy the upper hand. Dungeons also contain Sharicite Symbols that trigger events, Save Points, Common Items, Gathering Points for item synthesis ingredients, and an exit.
Battles begin when the player touches an enemy on the field or during an event. Each character’s turn is measured by Action Points (AP). Normal attacks and items use AP until it runs out, ending the turn. Characters also have Skill Points (SP) for using skills or activating HDD (Hard Drive Divinity) for CPUs (Console Patron Units, the goddesses) or CPU Candidates. Skills differ in range, effect, and power, and only one skill can be used per turn, ending the turn regardless of remaining AP. HDD requires 100 SP to activate; once on, it steadily consumes SP until it depletes, reverting the character. Up to 100 SP can be carried between battles.
Movement is shown by a blue circle around the character, marking where they can move. Some normal moves shrink this circle. Turn order depends on the Agility stat—higher Agility means earlier turns. The command menu lets characters perform normal attacks, use skills, activate HDD, or end their turn. They can also swap with standby characters using AP and SP, escape from non-scripted battles (based on the Luck stat), or use items.

Lore & Background
The story takes place in an alternate universe from the first game, where Arfoire is dead. A group called ASIC (Arfoire Syndicate of International Crime), led by CFW Magic, has risen and grown powerful, affecting many residents of Gamindustri. The CPUs and Nepgear travel to the Gamindustri Graveyard to combat ASIC but are overpowered and captured. Three years later, IF and Compa arrive to find Neptune, and with the power of a Sharicite crystal, they free Nepgear, though the crystal breaks. Nepgear must recover her strength, locate the mascots of the landmasses, and free Gamindustri from ASIC's influence.
Reader's Guide
Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 is significant for overhauling the first game's dungeon and battle systems. Random encounters were replaced with visible enemies on the map, and a Symbol Attack mechanic allows players to gain the upper hand by striking first, with a visual cue inspired by Metal Gear Solid. The battle system uses Action Points (AP) and Skill Points (SP), with a turn order based on Agility. The Guard Points (GP) system returns, and normal combos can be edited into Rush, Heavy Hits, or Break types, with EX Finishes as combo finishers. The Chirper system (a play on Twitter) lets players view NPC conversations, and the Guild offers quests that affect CPU Shares. Item synthesis requires recipes and sometimes a character's Lily Rank, which also influences endings. The Costume Canvas allows editing Nepgear's HDD outfit using uploaded images. The game's legacy includes a portable remaster and a direct sequel, Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory.
