Lore & Background

Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark was developed by 6 Eyes Studio, a studio formed by developers who had previously worked on Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled. A dispute with their publisher led to the closure of that earlier studio, Archcraft. Programmer Pierre Leclerc, after experiencing trouble with his American visa, used the opportunity to form a new independent studio and work on Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark. The game was successfully funded on Kickstarter in October 2017 and entered early access in August 2018 before its full release in 2019.

Gameplay is turn-based and tactical, similar to Final Fantasy Tactics. Players create adventurers who can be customized by choosing character class and special abilities. The game offers multiple difficulty settings: on the lowest difficulty, characters suffer no negative effects from being defeated; otherwise, they receive a temporary penalty if forced to fight again immediately. The highest difficulty level introduces permadeath.

Reception was positive on Metacritic. Game Informer described the tactical combat as 'the stuff dreams are made of', and RPGFan called it 'a truly magnificent game that SRPG aficionados simply must play'. RPGSite, while calling it derivative of Final Fantasy Tactics, recommended it to fans of that game. Digitally Downloaded felt it perfectly balanced nostalgia and the subversion of genre expectations. However, the plot received criticism: the writing was described as 'straightforward and forgettable', 'awkward and immature', and 'a Tactics successor in mechanics only'.

Reader's Guide

Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark holds significance as a modern tactical RPG that directly channels the gameplay of Final Fantasy Tactics while offering extensive customization and difficulty options. Its Kickstarter success and early access period demonstrate the viability of crowdfunding for niche genre revivals. The game's multiple difficulty settings, including a permadeath mode, cater to both casual players and hardcore tactical enthusiasts. Critics praised its combat system as exemplary, with Game Informer calling it 'the stuff dreams are made of' and RPGFan urging SRPG fans to play it. However, the narrative was widely seen as a weak point, with reviewers noting that the writing was straightforward, forgettable, awkward, and immature. This contrast between strong mechanics and weak storytelling positions Fell Seal as a game that succeeds as a tactical experience but fails to match the narrative depth of its inspirations. Its legacy is that of a mechanically sound tribute to the tactical RPG genre, recommended primarily to fans of Final Fantasy Tactics who prioritize gameplay over plot.
