Wizard of Legend

A top-down 2D roguelike with spell-based combat and procedurally generated dungeons.

Wizard of Legend

Wizard of Legend is a 2018 indie roguelike from American developer Contingent99 and publisher Humble Bundle. The project was crowdfunded via Kickstarter in 2016. Players control a wizard navigating a procedurally generated dungeon, using a broad selection of spells to clear enemy mobs, defeat three major bosses, and overcome a final boss to claim the title "Wizard of Legend." Critics gave the game generally favorable reviews. A sequel, Wizard of Legend 2, launched in October 2024, developed by Dead Mage.

In this top-down 2D roguelike, the player’s wizard must complete the Chaos Trials—a 10-floor procedurally generated dungeon—by casting spells called arcana. Each button or key triggers a specific arcana type: a basic attack, an evade, a powerful signature arcana, and various standard arcana for support. Each floor contains three shops, two run by the same NPC, except on boss floors (though shops appear just before the final boss). Money collected in the dungeon buys new spells from a shop on every level, while Chaos Gems—a persistent currency—let players permanently add spells or relics to their loadout before entering. Outfits, purchased with Chaos Gems, alter starting stats like health, defense, or damage; once inside the dungeon, the robe cannot be swapped, only optionally boosted by an NPC. The third shop on a floor is a random NPC offering relics, arcana, healing, item sales, or stat boosts, often with a downside to consider. Before entering the dungeon, players can also interact with a few NPCs for temporary boosts. Victory requires clearing all floors, defeating three major bosses (representing fire, earth, water, air, and lightning), and then the final boss, who wields all normal elements plus chaos.

Arcana fall into six elements: Fire, Air, Earth, Lightning, Water, and Chaos. All but chaos arcana can be bought with Chaos Gems; chaos arcana are earned only by defeating the final council member, one per trial run. As of update V1.23, there are 36 arcana each for fire, air, earth, lightning, and water, plus 24 chaos arcana. Arcana are split into four categories: Basic (low cooldown, most used), Dash (evasion and damage, unlimited uses but special effects have cooldowns), Standard (more powerful, dealing extra damage or buffing the player), and Signature (identical to standard but deal massive damage when the signature meter is full).

Lore & Background

Wizard of Legend is a top-down 2D roguelike game where the player controls a wizard attempting to complete a 10-floor procedurally generated dungeon, the 'Chaos Trials', using a selection of various spells to defeat enemies and bosses. Each button or key casts a spell, called 'arcana', in the form of a basic attack, an evade, a 'signature' arcana, and standard arcana. The dungeon contains three shops per floor, with two always run by the same NPC, and a third random NPC offering various functions, often with a downside. New spells and passive upgrades called Relics can be bought with collected money or Chaos Gems, a persistent currency. Players may also buy different robes called Outfits with Chaos Gems, which alter starting stats but cannot be changed once in the dungeon. The game is completed after defeating three major bosses (wizards representing fire, earth, water, air, and lightning) and a final boss representing all normal elements plus chaos.

Reader's Guide

Wizard of Legend's significance lies in its fluid, spell-driven combat and flexible arcana system, which allows players to mix and match over 200 spells across six elements. The game's generally favourable reception highlighted its satisfying moment-to-moment combat and beautiful spell effects, though critics noted repetition in dungeon targets and frame skips on the Nintendo Switch edition. The game sold 300,000 copies within 16 days of release and over 500,000 by the end of July 2018, indicating strong commercial performance. Its Kickstarter success, raising $72,681 against a $50,000 goal, demonstrated community interest in a fast-paced, co-op-capable roguelike. The sequel, Wizard of Legend 2, developed by Dead Mage and released in October 2024, continues the series. The game's legacy includes its emphasis on player experimentation with arcana and relics, and its structured Chaos Trials that increase difficulty across four sections, each themed with an element.
