Dear Rouge formed in 2012 after Drew and Danielle McTaggart, both touring musicians in separate projects, met, dated, and married. Danielle had previously performed in the duo Gaetz Ave and as a solo artist under Elle, while Drew was a member of the Vancouver indie band Maclean. The band's name is a bilingual play on Red Deer, Alberta. They independently released two EPs in 2012—Heads Up! Watch Out! and Kids Wanna Know—and won the Peak Performance Project grand prize of CA$102,700 in November 2012.

In 2013, the band partnered with Exposure Contest for a video editing contest for their single 'Thinking About You.' Their breakthrough single 'I Heard I Had' was released in October 2013, charted at #3 on Alternative Rock and Modern Rock charts in March 2014, and won the 2015 SOCAN Songwriting Prize. They signed to Universal Music Group's Canadian branch in October 2014 and released their debut album Black to Gold in March 2015. The album's title track hit #2 on Canadian Alt-Rock charts, and the band won the Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2016.

Their second album PHASES was released in March 2018, with the single 'Live Through The Night' becoming their first #1 on Canadian Alternative Rock charts. They won Pop Artist of the Year and Songwriters of the Year at the 2018 Western Canadian Music Awards. Their third album Spirit arrived in April 2022, featuring the #1 single 'Fake Fame.' In 2024, they released the album Lonesome High, with the single 'Goon' reaching #1 on Canadian Alternative Rock charts.
