The Hive
A subterranean nightmare where science went wrong and monsters were born.
The Hive is a massive, subterranean bio-weapon research facility buried deep beneath the streets of Raccoon City, serving as the secret heart of Umbrella Corporation's most dangerous experiments. While publicly presented as an industrial waste disposal site, it was actually designed to contain and study the T-virus and other biological threats away from public scrutiny. The facility is infamous for its labyrinthine corridors, automated defense systems, and the terrifying creatures born from failed experiments, making it one of the most hostile environments in the film series. Note: The Hive is a film-only creation and does not appear in the video game canon, where the equivalent underground facility is called the Umbrella Laboratory (NEST), first appearing in Resident Evil 2 (1998).

Lore & Background
Conceived as the ultimate fortress for biological warfare research, The Hive was built with a self-destruct mechanism and automated security protocols to ensure that if containment failed, the threat would be eliminated along with the facility. Umbrella scientists worked in isolation here, pushing the boundaries of genetic engineering to create super-soldiers and viral pathogens capable of reshaping humanity or ending it. The facility's design prioritized secrecy over safety, featuring redundant lockdowns and lethal traps intended to stop intruders rather than protect the researchers from their own creations. When the T-virus finally breached containment, the automated systems turned on the personnel, sealing them inside with the very monsters they had created, turning the research hub into a tomb of flesh and steel. Its destruction is exclusive to the film series and does not apply to the game universe.
Reader's Guide
The Hive serves as the primary setting for the first film, establishing the tone of claustrophobic horror that defines the series' early chapters. Visually, it is a stark contrast to the city above, characterized by cold industrial steel, flickering emergency lighting, and oppressive darkness. Key events include the initial infiltration by Alice and her team, the discovery of the T-virus source, and the terrifying encounters with mutated creatures like Lickers and Hunters. The facility's eventual self-destruction marks a turning point, signaling that Umbrella's secrets can no longer be contained.
Did You Know?
- The Hive was designed to automatically incinerate all biological evidence if a containment breach occurred.
- Many of the monsters found here were created from humans infected with the T-virus during experiments.
- Automated turrets and security drones were programmed to eliminate anyone entering unauthorized zones.
