History
The amateur team first reached Bavaria's top division, the tier-three Amateurliga Nordbayern, in 1955 after winning the 2. Amateurliga Mittelfranken-Süd and finishing second in the promotion round. It was the first reserve side to play at that level, preceding FC Bayern Munich II by a year. In its debut season the team placed sixth out of fourteen, then dropped to thirteenth the following year, three points above relegation. The team remained there until 1963, when a league reorganisation placed it in the new tier-four Landesliga Bayern-Mitte. After a fifth-place finish in 1963–64, it won the Landesliga the next season and moved up to the statewide Amateurliga Bayern (Bayernliga). In its first year back, the team finished second, two points behind BC Augsburg; as reserve teams were barred from promotion beyond the third division, it could not have advanced even if it had won. Performances then declined gradually, from fifth to seventh to tenth to thirteenth by 1970. In 1969–70 the side escaped relegation by two points. Back in the Landesliga, the team improved season by season until a setback in 1977–78, when it finished eleventh, one point above a relegation place. The following year brought improvement, and 1979–80 was outstanding: the team won the league with 61 points out of a possible 68. Returning to the Bayernliga, it again finished runners-up in its first season, this time to MTV Ingolstadt. Decline set in more quickly, and by 1983 the side was relegated. It won the Landesliga title again the next season and returned to the Bayernliga.
Recent seasons
With the introduction of the Bezirksoberligas in 1988 as the new fifth tier, all leagues below dropped one tier. The Regionalligas in 1994 and the 3. Liga in 2008 as the new third tier caused further drops. In 2012 the Regionalliga Bayern became the new fourth tier, splitting the Bayernliga into northern and southern divisions, expanding the Landesligas from three to five, and abolishing the Bezirksoberligas, elevating all leagues from the Bezirksligas upward by one tier.
