History

The reserve side originated as BC Augsburg Amateure, which played one season in the southern division of the Amateurliga Bayern in 1962–63, finishing sixth and qualifying for the unified Bavarian league. The team was relegated the following year, finishing 17th, alongside the decline of the senior side. After the merger that formed FC Augsburg, the reserve team spent years in lower amateur leagues before returning to the Landesliga Bayern-Süd in 1976 as FC Augsburg Amateure, finishing runners-up in its first season. In 1977 the team won the Schwaben Cup and entered the 1977–78 German Cup, defeating second-division Arminia Hannover and amateur club 1. FC Normannia Gmünd away before losing 0–4 to Hertha BSC Berlin in the third round; the senior team also lost in the same round, to TSV 1860 München. The side became a founding member of the Bezirksoberliga Schwaben in 1988 but was withdrawn at season's end and disbanded for over a decade. After 2004 the team returned to the Landesliga Bayern-Süd, achieving good results but no promotion until a second-place finish in 2012. It was one of two clubs in that league to apply for a licence in the new Regionalliga Bayern, and through the promotion play-off it advanced past SB/DJK Rosenheim and FC Schweinfurt 05 to enter the Regionalliga in 2012, moving from the sixth tier to the fourth without playing in the fifth. In 2012–13 the side struggled against relegation, defending its place in a two-leg play-off against BC Aichach with a 5–2 aggregate. The following season it finished fourth in the Regionalliga. After two better seasons, including a fourth place in 2014, Augsburg entered the relegation play-off again in 2015–16, successfully defending its place against TSV 1860 Rosenheim.

Recent seasons

With the introduction of the Bezirksoberligas in 1988 as the new fifth tier, all leagues below dropped one tier. The Regionalligas in 1994 and the 3. Liga in 2008 as the new third tier caused further drops. The establishment of the Regionalliga Bayern in 2012 as the new fourth tier in Bavaria split the Bayernliga into northern and southern divisions, expanded the Landesligas from three to five, and abolished the Bezirksoberligas, elevating all leagues from the Bezirksligas upward by one tier.
