Reception

Jonathan Broxton of Movie Music UK called the score the strongest of the Hunger Games scores, noting its restrained nature but finding the lack of significant thematic statements disappointingly anonymous, though the quieter moments provided enough emotion. He praised "The Hanging Tree" as a standout single moment of the year. Filmtracks.com also considered it the best of the three film scores, writing that despite continuing melodic haziness, it achieves greater potential with each entry.

James Southall of Movie Wave said the score offers plenty for audiences but criticized the album's excessive length and felt it did not match Howard's Maleficent. Michelle McCue and Melissa Thompson of We Are Movie Geeks listed it among 2014's best scores and soundtracks, alongside Maleficent, stating the music covers epic action to intimate poignancy. Den of Geek also named it one of 2014's best film scores, with Ivan Redford noting the darker development of themes matches the protagonist's growing identity.
