Lore & Background

The Wapiti Tribe resides on the Wapiti Indian Reservation, located in the Ambarino region—a sparsely populated mountain wilderness. The tribe's territory is contested ground as railroads and settlers push further into the mountains. Arthur Morgan's interactions with them reveal a people caught between survival and surrender. The tribe's plight mirrors the Van der Linde gang's own decline, offering Arthur a grim reflection of what happens when the frontier closes.

Reader's Guide

The Wapiti live on the Wapiti Indian Reservation, the only settlement in the mountain wilderness of Ambarino. Their chieftain, Rains Fall, first meets Arthur in Saint Denis and hires him to steal incriminating documents from Leviticus Cornwall's company, which is trying to move the tribe off its land in search of oil. Arthur helps Rains Fall and his son Eagle Flies several times, and Dutch joins in, hoping the fighting will draw the Army away from the gang. Eagle Flies is captured and taken to Fort Wallace, rescued by Arthur and Charles, and later mortally wounded saving Arthur from Colonel Favours. In 1907 Rains Fall tells John Marston that his tribe was forced to flee to Canada.
