Hamilton had led most of the race and appeared on course to win his eighth title. Verstappen overtook Hamilton on the final lap after a controversial safety car restart. The ensuing dispute stemmed from race director Michael Masi's handling of the safety car, which was seen by some as inconsistent with usual race procedures. Mercedes protested the race result, which the stewards dismissed. The FIA conducted an inquiry, confirming the race and championship results, and concluded that the rules had been ambiguous. Masi was replaced by two new race directors.

The Grand Prix was the final race for world champion Kimi Räikkönen, who retired after a two-decade career. This was also the final race for Honda as a works power unit supplier until the 2026 Australian Grand Prix in partnership with Aston Martin. The Yas Marina Circuit underwent a layout change to increase top speeds and overtaking opportunities. Sole tyre supplier Pirelli provided the C3, C4, and C5 compounds. Title rivals Verstappen and Hamilton entered the round level on 369.5 points.

• The race was originally scheduled for 5 December but was rescheduled to 12 December after the postponement of the Australian Grand Prix due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Nikita Mazepin tested positive for COVID-19 after qualifying and withdrew from the race; he was not replaced.
• This was the last race for Antonio Giovinazzi, who moved to Formula E, and for Mazepin, whose contract was terminated after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
• Bottas raced with a special helmet featuring photos of his moments at Mercedes, and sported blue racing overalls.
