Lore & Background
SpellForce 3 is set in the fictional fantasy world of Eo, 500 years before events in SpellForce: The Order of Dawn. The player controls Tahar, the child of Isamo Tahar, and quests alongside characters mentioned in the first game as the mages of The Circle, including Yria, Isgrimm, Rohen Tahir, Uram, Ianna, Undergast, and Gor. The plot begins with Isamo Tahar, a powerful mage, starting a rebellion against the crown known as the Mage Wars. General Sentenza Noria, tasked with eliminating Isamo, saves Tahar's child from execution, and the child later trains as a Wolf Guard. Eight years later, the Mage Wars are over, and a cult called the Purity of Light appears, spurred by public resentment of mages.
Reader's Guide
SpellForce 3 is notable for blending role-playing and real-time strategy elements, a hallmark of the series. Players control a created character and up to three companions, each with customizable abilities through items and skill trees. The game features an isometric perspective, a skill-wheel for quick actions, and a world map for travel. Maps with RTS elements require building outposts, gathering resources, and recruiting units from three races: elves, humans, and orcs. The game includes a story-driven campaign playable solo or with two players, and a skirmish mode for battles against AI or other players. Two standalone expansions, Soul Harvest (2018) and Fallen God (2020), were released, along with a free multiplayer-only version called SpellForce 3: Versus. An upgraded version, SpellForce 3 Reforced, was released for Windows in December 2021 and for consoles in June 2022.
