Lore & Background

Goikoetxea's path to Real Sociedad was unusual: after breaking through at Osasuna, he signed for Barcelona but was immediately loaned for two years to Osasuna's neighbours Real Sociedad in a deal also involving Txiki Begiristain and José Mari Bakero who went to Barcelona from San Sebastián. Over two seasons with Real Sociedad, he only missed two league games, achieving another fifth place in his second campaign. His time in San Sebastián sharpened his reputation as a reliable, ever-present right-sided player before he finally arrived at the Camp Nou in 1990–91.
