José Luis Orbegozo was born in San Sebastián on 2 September 1929 and became a member of Real Sociedad at age six in 1936. He joined the board of directors in 1966 as treasurer, and after the club's historic promotion to the First Division, he was named president in 1967. Under his mandate, Real Sociedad consolidated in the First Division, qualified for European competitions for the first time, and won league titles in 1980–81 and 1981–82, plus the Super Cup in 1982 against Real Madrid. He was a firm defender of the youth team and, with his friend Javier Expósito, strengthened the club's foundations.

In 1980, Orbegozo inaugurated a field in Orbegozo, intending to build a new stadium in Zubieta for Real Sociedad. The project used a subsidy for the FIFA 1982 World Cup, but San Sebastián was ruled out as a venue due to city council opposition, and the field became a training ground and sports city. He left the presidency in 1983, replaced by Iñaki Alkiza, and received the gold and diamond medal from the club. Upon leaving, he warned that the club had 'a death row' because it lacked its own field and heritage.

Orbegozo died in San Sebastián on 17 January 2010 at age 80 from a cerebral infarction while watching a Real Sociedad match. The club announced black armbands and a minute of silence in his memory. His funeral took place on 18 January at the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, attended by the entire 2009–10 squad and past presidents and leaders.
